What is School Readiness?Top of Page

First 5 Glenn County receives matching funds from the California Children and Families Commission to fund School Readiness programs in communities served by schools that are in the lowest 3 deciles on the Academic Performance Index. A school readiness program will continue to be funded when the school improves its API standing, as in the case of the Hamilton City School Readiness program.

The purpose of the First 5 School Readiness Initiative is to expand the abilities of families, schools, and communities to prepare young children to enter school with the ability to not only succeed, but to flourish. One way that this goal is achieved in Hamilton City is by the School Readiness funded Parents As Teachers program which focuses on the families with pregnant mothers and families with children up to age three.

All School Readiness efforts address California's cultural and linguistic diversity as well as the needs of children with disabilities.

School readiness includes the following three components:
  • Children Ready for School-cognitively, physically, socially and emotionally
  • Schools Ready for Children-schools participate in the transition process from home, child care or preschool. The receiving school provides parents and caregivers with the behavior and academic expectations of the school
  • Family and Community Support Services-education services, social services and health services are available and accessible to ensure that families have what they need to support a child's success in school
SCHOOL READINESS COLLABORATIVE PARTNERS
